Beware of Black Friday technology deals. – Legal Technology Solutions

Beware of Black Friday technology deals.

Between Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Peachy Thursday and Small Business day- lots of deals will be attacking our inboxes and there are a few things to remember, before you get your “great” $200 computer…

  1. “STILL WANT WINDOWS 7? GET IT NOW FOR CHEAP!” –  Those will be “leftovers” that stores will try to get rid of… Windows 10 is about to be launched next year… It’s very similar to windows 8.1, and I already tested it and saw lots of benefits/ user-friendly and security features that I’m sure we’ll all like.
Don’t be tempted to get windows 7 just because you like the layout… don’t fight the change… you will eventually (well… by January 2015 according to Microsoft) need to jump on the new Windows box-like layout anyway… All decent computers will have Windows 8.1 on them these days… if not- don’t get it…
  2. You get what you pay for!!! – Especially in technology… There is a reason one computer cost $1500, and another one, that LOOKS the same, cost only $200… There is NO WAY a manufacturer will be able to sell a decent computer for $200…
There are a few things we educate people about when they ask about purchasing a new computer:
  • Do you need to travel with the computer ? (to determine laptop vs. desktop)
  • Do you need to join a Domain at your office ? If so- you’ll need windows 8.1Pro
  • Do you already have a bag that you want to use ? make sure it fits in…
  • Do you plan on using a docking station ? VERY FEW models these days support docking stations (unless you get a USB version of a docking station, like this one…)
  • Do you NEED a touch screen? (or can you use a $40 USB tablet module that will allow you to use a pen/ touch pad as needed?)
  • Do you plan on moving your MS office from your old computer, to the new one ? If so, make sure you have Office 2007 or newer, or you won’t be able to move it to Windows 8.1 computer…
  • Do you plan on using an older printer/ scanner/ other peripherals ? Make sure they are supported by windows 8… or you will have to upgrade those as well…
  • Do you want to plan on paying someone to move your data for you and set it up for you ? If so- a slow, cheap computer will take longer to set up … which means, cost more for labor to set up if your computer “guy” charges by the hour…
  • Do you want to install Office and other full version programs on the computer ? (If so, don’t get Windows 8 RT version.. Stick with Windows 8 Pro…)
  • Do you even NEED a new computer ?? (some people can enjoy the speed and “clean-ness” of a new computer by simply re-installing Windows… We offer this service as a flat fee by the way… call if you want details)
  • Do you have a need to edit videos or anything else that will require higher-end graphics card?
  • Do you store lots of items / data on your computer ? or it’s all in the cloud?
  • Do you want GREAT warranty? (If so, look for a great warranty… not the generic 1-year coverage)
  • Do you need to PROTECT your computer from theft etc? (Windows 8 pro comes with bit-locker…)
  1. Solid State drives are a HUGE benefit/ speed factor. Newer computers in a decent price will have an SSD in them… you won’t get an SSD drive with a $200 computer…
  2. What is the maximum RAM that your computer will support ? in almost ALL cases I’ve looked at, cheaper computers will max at a ridiculous low number like 4GB…

There are obviously other factors, but this should be enough to make the point of “you get what you pay for” in most cases…
